HASBARA: TELLING THE ISRAEL STORY TO THE MANY WHO JUST DON'T KNOW
by Avrum I. Ashery
When attempting to advocate for Israel or telling the Israel story to the American public, it will be very important to first understand the following concepts.
Be Pro-ACTIVE, not REACTIVE.
As important as it is to know what the press and TV news are saying
about Israel, which is often wrong or skewed, it is far more
productive to get out there first in the face of the American public,
sending them important messages of the many Israeli accomplishments.
Americans love accomplishments. In marketing any product, the
message that gets out there first, if creative and impacting, often
sells the product. So we need to look over our collective shoulders
and see what creative, impacting messages have we sent the American
public about all of Israel's exciting accomplishments in health,
science technology and agriculture, and being first responders in
natural disasters around the world. not to mention democracy, freedom
and religious tolerance.
Only recently did a few news networks trip over the Israeli field
hospital in Haiti, the first to meet the Haitians' needs in this
disaster. Israel in the past was always there in Mexico, Bosnia,
Africa, etc,. but who knew of Israel's help to the world? It seemed
outside of Haiti, Israel Hasbarah Office has classically missed the
boat in tooting their own good horn.
If the Israeli Government has yet to learn how to market itself to
General America, then the obligation rests on the Organized Jewish
community with its Zionist oriented organizations. Often when these
Jewish organizations have conventions in Washington, their members run
up to the "Hill" to lobby the Congress, but what these well
intentioned people have forgotten are the constituents of the
Congress.
The general American public has yet to understand the value
of Israel. They are not negative, but just don't know, and educating
mainstream America has yet to be a priority of our American Jewish
community. When it comes to media, we have yet to fully understand it
and use it. Often what we do is REACT to it and when I say media, we
too often define it as editorials, press, TV news and websites, where
classic media has been and still is:
TV/radio advertising, print ads, which can also be on line, outdoor
billboards, transit posters for subways and buses, where hundreds of
thousands use to commute daily.
In saying this, I will say, I have yet to see any Jewish Health
organization have a poster campaign about Israel's quality health care
for both Arab and Jew. I have yet to see any Tour Israel
outdoor billboards on the interstate highways or in the city. I have
yet to hear any spunky radio 30 second spot ad about Israel. When the
AJC has their non-media executive director speak a 60 second ad on
Israel, with no creativity and no impact, it becomes the sleeper it is
wasted air time.
Make the message meaningful
When we observe the numerous signs outside of Jewish institutions
we see in the 2 seconds it takes to drive by, "We support Israel," and
what have the drivers learned? That Jews support Israel, so what else
is new? What About..."ISRAEL=Freedom, Democracy and Religious
Tolerance." In 2 seconds give them food for thought. Even in a
dark movie theater before the main feature, there are commercial slide
shows advertising everything. I never saw a creative message about
Israel and all her accomplishments.
We need to understand that most Americans who have yet to learn
about Israel -- and there are many -- are not interested in reading
tons of PhD white papers, with all their Zionist historical time
lines, maps of historical borders, and photos of Arab 2 year olds
strapped with explosives.
On a national and regional scope we can use
proper media creatively.
On a grassroots level, we can use less expensive,
down home communicative methods.
We can treat the American public to creative, impacting
messages about all of Israel's wonderful accomplishments.
Let's start with Haiti and move on from there.
ADDENDUM:
For starters, here's some of Israel's accomplishments compiled by
Reut Cohen. It more than a couple of months old, so it's bound to be
incomplete.

Considering the boycotts that the Arabs and their Presbyterian
friendlies are promoting, I've seen this approach used to highlight
the implications of isolating Israel: telling people to do the boycott
right by throwing out 30% of their medicines and flu vaccines because
they were made in Israel, etc.
This is from Lakhota Butterfly who picked up on a boycott idea and
expanded it.
